Congo-Brazzaville: Looking back on February 5, 1979, a coup d’état and a historical imposture

By Laurent / February 4, 2025

On January 30, 2019, on the sidelines of a raid on the headquarters of the PCT “deputy” Mr. Ferréol Gassackys, the Secretary General of PCT (The Congolese Labor Party) Mr. Pierre Ngolo, second personality of the regime, announced the celebration with fanfare of the 40 years of exercise of power of its leader Mr. Denis Sassou Nguesso.

Sacrilege, indecency and cynicism mark this celebration, this, in a bankrupt country, a people reduced to begging and misery; a state sphere in which nepotism, ethnocentrism, theft, corruption and mediocrity reign.

Yesterday’s Marxist-Leninist revolutionaries have been converted into pseudo social democrats of circumstance, however formatted to tropical totalitarianism, this heterogeneous political clientele has equipped itself with a new spirituality namely tropical Freemasonry which has become an instrument of social ascension, promotion, ethical insalubrity and intrigues.

In short, “the man of concrete actions” has become “the permanent destroyer”, “everything for the people and nothing but for the people” rhymes with “everything for the clan and nothing but for the thieves” in a blatant ethnocentric imposture.

At least three generations of Congolese are victims of this primitive governance of the PCT-elephant.

By going back chronologically to the events that allowed Denis Sassou Nguesso to rise to power, here is the scene thus set by President Marien Ngouabi almost a year before his assassination.

The regime’s commands are in the hands of 5 “comrades” who should prepare the third congress of the PCT, the congress of “Radicalization”.

On December 12, 1975, end of the session of the Central Committee. The Political Bureau of the Central Committee resigns. A “Special Revolutionary Staff” composed of 5 members, temporarily replaces the Political Bureau until the next Extraordinary Congress of the Party.

The Special Revolutionary Staff is composed of Comrades: Marien NGOUABI: President; Jean-Pierre THISTERE TCHICAYA: Responsible for the Party’s Permanence; Louis-Sylvain NGOMA: Prime Minister, Head of Government, Responsible for Planning; Denis Sassou NGUESSO: Responsible for Defense and Security; Jean-Pierre NGOMBE: Responsible for Education, Propaganda and Information.

Clearly the worm was in the fruit, the plot to assassinate President Marien Ngouabi was underway.

On March 19, 1976, just a few weeks after these changes, the President’s helicopter crashed in the forest of Northern Congo, with on board, in addition to President Ngouabi himself, the pilot Kakou, Professor Diamond, and the businessman Nicoloso. For 5 days, the Nation had no news of Commander Marien Ngouabi and his companions. Before the President could courageously resurface.

In early March 1977, Marien Ngouabi received a letter from his predecessor Alphonse Massamba-Debat. In his letter, the latter recommended that he resign, because the gravity of the situation in the country required it.

On March 3, 1977, President Marien Ngouabi received the former president and his wife in audience. Together, they concluded a republican pact for joint management of the State, with a view to national unity and the economic recovery of the Country.

A few days later, during a popular meeting organized by the URFC, President Marien Ngouabi violently attacked French imperialism, which he held responsible for the economic difficulties of the Congo. He also uttered this enigmatic sentence: “When your country is dirty and lacks lasting peace, you can only restore its cleanliness and unity by washing it with your blood.”

When that fateful day of March 18, 1977, namely the assassination of President Commander Marien Ngouabi, as well as in the interval of a week, former President Alphonse Massamba Débat and Cardinal Emile Biayenda, the unspeakable, the irreparable, the immeasurable, the “absolute sacrilege” had just been committed in the Congo.

The members of the Special Revolutionary General Staff and the future Military Committee of the PCT bear full responsibility for these methodical assassinations, in particular Commander Denis Sassou Nguesso in charge of defense and security.

Here is a summary of the first stage of the seizure of power by Commander Denis Sassou Nguesso, the inaugural act of the creation of the PCT-Elephant, the first historical dispute between the PCT and the Congolese People.

PCT-Elephant at the controls of Congo-Brazzaville or the beginning of the political scam.

After the death of President Marien NGOUABI on March 18, the Central Committee of the Congolese Labor Party set up a “Military Committee of the Party” (CMP) by act No. 005/PCT of March 19, 1977, leading to the dissolution of the Special Revolutionary General Staff.

The CMP’s task, until further notice, is to prepare national funerals, manage state affairs, ensure the defense of the People and the Revolution in order to maintain National Peace and Concord so that everything is for the people, only for the people.

On April 3, 1977, the Military Committee of the Party invested with full Powers. Thus vociferated the propagandists of the PCT.

As soon as he was at the head of the CMP and therefore of the State, Yhomby Opango undertook the work of restructuring the state apparatus to ward off the crisis and revive the economy. He attacked the sacrosanct Determining Trilogy: Co-management, Co-responsibility, Co-decision.The famous Determining Trilogy, in other words the “party directs the State”, a true managerial heresy, The Determining Trilogy associated the Party, the Union and Management in the management of State enterprises.

Through this system, access to responsibilities in the business world was often determined by militancy rather than by professional skills. This has often resulted in a drop in productivity and economic inefficiency.

Under Yhomby Opango, meritocracy, rigor and Excellence are gradually taking over as new standards of governance. Error! The conspirators of the assassination of President Marien Ngouabi find through this programmatic orientation the pretext to mobilize in order to avoid a loss of privileges and advantages linked to the party and mass organizations. The purged, that is to say the victims of radicalization, are trying to regain control.

The CSC, a single union affiliated to the PCT, supported by part of the UJSC, is triggering a general strike of all workers to demand the rehabilitation of the Central Committee. The diplomatic angle under Yhomby Opango consisted of loosening the grip around the Congo, while continuing the renegotiation of oil contracts.

He went further by initiating proceedings before international courts against France regarding the sabotage of the potash mines of Holle (Tchitondi), a crime of lèse-majesté for the mafia networks of Jacques Foccart’s Françafrique who would get closer to Denis Sassou Nguesso.

Another programmatic orientation, relevant in substance and questionable in form, that of the resumption of retail trade left in the hands of foreigners, particularly West Africans (BCM).Despite his good intentions to restore the country, Yhomby Opango’s short term was heavily tarnished by his bloody radicalism in the Stalinist trials organized following the assassination of President Marien Ngouabi, the referral order written on an express investigation report and an instruction file led by the assassins of President Marien Ngouabi condemned poor innocents on subjective grounds, because “Kongo”.

The refusal of a presidential pardon was added to the heavy liability of the action of President Yhomby Opango. The PCT-Elephant born of fears about the materialization of the recommendations contained in the declaration of 12/12/1975, consolidating their first victory by the assassination of Commander Marien Ngouabi was preparing to definitively conquer power in this year 1979

.February 5, 1979, the palace coup or the triumph of cunning, conspiracy, mediocrity, ethnocentrism and waste.

On January 27, 1979, the Military Committee of the Party met in Brazzaville under the chairmanship of General Jacques Joachim Yhomby -Opango.

At the end of this meeting, the Military Committee of the Party (CMP) summons the Central Committee of the Congolese Labor Party to meet in Extraordinary Session on “February 5, 1979” in order to prepare the Assizes of the next Ordinary Congress of the Party for December 1979.

Commander Denis Sassou Nguesso activates the two levers he controls, namely the party and security to storm the presidency. A real campaign of propaganda and intoxication is put in place by the former students of the USSR, GDR, CUBA and ROMANIA in order to discredit Yhomby Opango.

The army opens the ball with Nicolas Mvouenze as permanent of the PCT-Elephant in the army, Bokamba Yangouma takes over for the CSC union, the Oba Apounou, Pierre Ngolo, Isidore Mvoumba instrumentalize the young people on behalf of the UJSC and Mountou Bayonne takes charge of the women.

Yhomby Opango and his supporters are described as the embodiment of the “liquidationist right-wing line”, that is to say a bourgeois right whose goal is to liquidate the PCT. The famous and no less primitive journalist Ibouloumoukoué is at the helm on the radio.

Yhomby Opango is made to feel guilty on the basis of simple “champagnard” gossip; the herbivore Okapi, a gift from Marshal Mobutu, has magically become a carnivore to consume 10 kg of meat per day; a bed from Conforama, a gift from President Omar Bongo to Mrs. Marie Noëlle Yhomby is the subject of a filthy presentation by primitives straight out of the bushes of Cuvette; the dozens of shoes of the Yhomby couple.

Opango presented as a trophy of supposed negligence. In short, a Stalinist modus operandi learned in schools in Eastern countries, 40 years later we are still there to the great misfortune of our People.

Aware and informed of this conspiracy, the lieutenants of the Praetorian Guard requested the green light from Yhomby Opango to “nip the plot in the bud” according to the consecrated expression. They had the men and the means.

Aware of the bloodbath and violence that would follow, General Yhomby Opango joined the ranks of presidents Fulbert Youlou, Alphonse Massamba Débat who ceded power without a fight, because they were not driven by a pathological obsession with power.

In poto-poto, we had our lives saved, the confrontation was imminent. It is unacceptable that today, after 40 years of Sassou Nguesso, 40 years of PCT-Elephant, that less than 3% of the population owns 80% of the national wealth, leaving others to share only misery.

It is equally unacceptable that today, all sectors of public education are devastated; that it is impossible for young high school graduates from the interior of the country to access university due to lack of resources; that it has become impossible for young graduates to build and feed a family.

People like Sassou Nguesso benefited in their youth (1940s, 50s and 60s), from social policies that they knowingly destroyed to guarantee the domination of their families and clans. It is also unacceptable that very young children wander around our cities, without this worrying the State and the adults who are supposed to watch over their education, their well-being; hence the problem of black babies.

It is unacceptable to hear, to observe, to suffer the destitution in which our health services find themselves. It is unacceptable to live next to military institutions incapable of fully assuming the republican missions that are theirs, because they have been transformed into a repressive and tribal lever at the service of power.

It is unacceptable, even criminal, to make Congo the most indebted country per capita, to make future generations pay the burden of the debt, to want to make poor Congolese pay a property tax when the barons of the regime never pay their taxes/duties, and have diverted thousands of billions of CFA francs to the world’s tax havens.

So many unacceptable things that make Congo today in a total disaster, accentuated by a corrupt administration, invigorating and maintaining this state of affairs. All this, of course, to the detriment of the majority of the People, forced to take refuge in religion.

This religion feeds them, inhabits them, sets the pace for their lives, their despair, their hope, forcing them to negotiate permanently with the angels, and sometimes others… In short, an atmosphere of the end of a reign. To cause this massacre, they privatized the State.

Some say that the State has become “a family grocery store”. We say that it is a giant casino, a casino where the jackpot is guaranteed every time; where you can make friends, cousins, nephews, children, mistresses win…, all those who want to feed on the beast and watch the rest of the People cry out for famine.

This is the assessment of the 40 years of February 5, 1979, and nothing else.
