Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo—January 28, 2025— Amid escalating violence and protests in Kinshasa, the residence of the Ambassador of Congo-Brazzaville was targeted and looted by angry demonstrators on Tuesday. The protestors, enraged by the ongoing conflict and regional tensions, stormed the embassy grounds, causing significant damage.
This attack is part of a broader wave of protests in the DRC’s capital, where several foreign embassies, including those of Rwanda, Uganda, France, Belgium, and the United States, have been targeted by demonstrators. Protestors accused these nations, especially Rwanda, of exacerbating the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, where M23 rebel fighters, supported by Rwandan troops, have seized control of parts of Goma.
The looting of the Congo-Brazzaville ambassador’s residence has heightened concerns over the safety of diplomats in the region. These acts of violence come amid a worsening crisis in Goma, where the M23 and Rwandan forces have taken control of the city’s airport and key areas, displacing thousands of civilians.
As tensions continue to rise, the international community is under increasing pressure to address the instability in the DRC. The situation remains fluid, with widespread fear that the conflict may escalate further.
