Ghys Fortuné Bemba Dombé, a Congolese journalist and writer, was brutally stabbed in the neck on September 14 at Corbeil-Essonnes station.
The alleged perpetrator, who was arrested, hasn’t explained his actions, leaving many unanswered questions.
Initially scheduled for September 17, the suspect’s immediate appearance was postponed to October 23.
Ghys Fortuné Bemba Dombé sought answers at the Évry-Courcouronnes criminal court but was met with a request from the suspect for more time to prepare his defense. The suspect, a 50-year-old who was intoxicated during the attack, has been detained and is being investigated for “attempted voluntary homicide.” The Évry public prosecutor’s office aims to determine the motive behind this violent act.
It’s disturbing to note that violence against journalists and writers is a growing concern worldwide. Incidents like these highlight the need for increased protection and support for members of the press.
